The Coffeehouse provides services for adults diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder that include:
  • "Drop-in" model, for people to attend discussions of relevant and interesting topics as their daily schedule allows
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Planning transitions between activities and places
  • Nursing Services
  • Peer Mentoring
  • Psychological Support

The goals of this program are:

  • To assist persons with Asperger's Disorder in developing coping and self-management skills to maintain stable behavior in various community settings.
  • To assist persons with Asperger's Disorder in developing effective communication skills and techniques to function in various social settings.
  • To provide education to the community on Asperger's Disorder and Autistic Disorders.

 

Adults 18 years of age and older, residing in Harris County, with a diagnoses of Asperger's Disorder or Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Adults must posses the cognitive ability to participate in the program. Individuals must also meet the criteria for Target Population, and have challenging behaviors that otherwise restrict their level of functioning in community programs.

 

The schedule may vary according to the needs and interests of the participants on any given day. Participants are encouraged to initiate socially appropriate, contextually relevant conversations.

The first step in the application process is to contact the consumer's MHMRA Service Coordinator and request a referral. The referral must include a valid Determination of Mental Retardation (note: the Determination of Mental Retardation is a process defined by the State, and is not intended to suggest that people with Asperger's Disorder have a diagnosis of mental retardation) and current information regarding the consumer's medical condition and behavioral issues. Consumers provide their own transportation. Consumers with special needs for transportation should contact their Service Coordinators.

 

 A financial assessment determines whether co-payments apply and/or if MHMRA is a part of your Insurance Provider Network. Consumers will need spending money for community rehearsal outings.

 

During the admission process, the Coffeehouse Team takes into consideration the consumer's right to choose their treatment options.
We consider each consumer's preferences, likes and dislikes. Once choices are agreed upon by the IDT and the consumer, they are documented on appropriate forms.

Consumers are discharged from this program based on the following:
  • Sufficient achievement of treatment objectives and improvement to be able to manage themselves productively in society.
  • Voluntary withdrawal of consumer.
  • Non-attendance without recent services.
  • Violation of Program Guidelines
