The consultative service program provides specialized speech/language, psychological and behavioral consultations to families and professionals.

Diagnostic services include:

  • Speech-language evaluations
  • Augmentative communication assessments
  • Audiological screenings

Therapeutic services include:

  • Development and training on use of low and high tech communication aids (e.g. electronic communication devices, communication notebooks/boards, etc.).
  • Consultation/training on strategies to enhance consumers’ communication skills.
  • Sign language training for consumers and direct care staff.

We serve adults, ages 18 and over, diagnosed with mental retardation and/or autism or other pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). We also serve children who are not eligible for speech and language services through the public school system.

The first step in the application process is to contact the consumer’s Service Coordinator and request a referral. The referral must include a valid Determination of Mental Retardation and current information regarding the consumer’s medical condition and behavioral issues. If the consumer does not have a Mental Retardation Division Service Coordinator visit this link to learn how to access MHMRA services.

Services are provided at MHMRA offices. Consumers/families provide their own transportation. Consumers with special transportation needs should contact their service coordinators to find out if they are eligible for transportation assistance.

A financial assessment determines whether co-payments apply and/or if MHMRA is a part of your Insurance Provider Network. Services for HCS and ICF-MR consumers are arranged through contracts with their providers.

The following services related to developmental disabilities are provided in addition to the diagnostic and therapeutic services listed above:

  • Consultation with families regarding implementation of in-home communication training programs.
  • Training for parents, staff, and community service providers on topics related to communication disorders and their treatment.
  • Referral/linkage to community resources for speech therapy services.
