What is Destination Dignity?

The Harris County Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Needs Council (IDD/NC) and the Intellectual and Developmental Planning Advisory Council (IDD/PAC) have come together in an effort to combat stigma. Persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are stigmatized daily in many ways, such as in employment opportunities, housing options, the education system, and in social settings. No member of society desires stigmatization, whether by race, religion or disability. Destination Dignity embodies the philosophy that greater awareness facilitates education, which ultimately combats the effects of stigma, such as discrimination, bigotry, and hate.

We appreciate your interest in our campaign and hope that you will join us in educating others in our community about the destruction that can come from the stigmatization of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

How Can I Help?

There are several ways you can make a difference in the lives of those diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

  • Commit to educating others about the effects of stigma. You can help by emailing and/or talking with family, friends, and coworkers about what IDD means and the many talents, abilities, and contributions made be persons diagnosed with IDD. We have composed some relevant literature you may use in speaking with others. View this information by clicking here.

  • Commit to share and display stigma-busting paraphernalia. At no charge, you can reserve and pickup destination dignity business-sized, information cards and wall posters. We also have available for purchase, stigma-busting T-shirts ($5.00 sizes S - XL; $6.95 size XXL). All paraphernalia can be picked-up at MHMRA of Harris County Conference Center, 7033 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77074. Please call to make arrangements for pick-up.

  • Commit to implementing other stigma-busting and information sharing activities in your organizations and communities, such as organized walks, presentations or campaigns.
