Why a Supported Employment Model?

Supported Employment helps people with mental illness find regular jobs of their choice with individualized and long-term support. Supported Employment is based on the idea (which is supported by research) that working in a regular community job with people who don’t have serious mental illness enhances people’s lives, promotes wellness, and reduces stigma. Every person recovering from mental illness needs to redefine recovery in their own way.

Researchers have studied vocational services in community agencies to discover which approaches are most effective. Reviewing the outcomes of traditional employment models versus a supported employment model, approximately 85% of respondents say they favor a supported employment model. The research evidence demonstrates that people are two to three times more likely to work in regular part-time or full-time jobs when participating in supported employment services than other vocational services.

Supported employment has been documented as an evidence-based practice that helps CFA participants obtain and maintain competitive employment. In fact, supported employment programs that follow the individual placement and support model has the highest fidelity in workplace success.
